Ms. Devoto: Good morning. Today we have another student produced Character Ed. It’s on the topic of service. Four Hillview students have written a Jeannie Ritchie Grant in the hopes of getting you involved in a service project that is very near and dear to their hearts. My sincere appreciation and congratulations to Sydney Young, Kinsey Dittmar, Katherine Reed and Kayla Satzger for their project, “Africa Day, Ethnicity, Education & Involvement.” Their goal is to raise money for two African educational organizations.
Kinsey: Hope Enterprises is a non-profit organization that operates in Ethiopia, a country in Eastern Africa. Started in 1971 in the capital city of Addis Ababa, it operates feeding programs that feed over 800 people a day, a ceramics workshop, and, their main focus, \ multiple schools. The children who attend these schools are the poorest of the poor, and the hope is that if one child from each family is educated then that child will break the cycle of poverty for them. Once selected and enrolled at the school, students receive food, medical care, clean water, a school uniform, school supplies, and a small amount of money each month, in addition to a very good education. The students are educated through high school or vocational school, and now, a university is being built so that the students of Hope can continue their education through college.
Sydney: Our second educational organization is also a non profit foundation. It was created by a former Hillview student and named, “The Power of One.” The premise being, that one person CAN make a difference. Asked to come on board last fall, the Hillview community has already supported this foundation by donating beanie babies and athletic uniforms through a 6th grade advisory drive. Collections made by The Power of One go to the Bovet School in Alexandra, South Africa where more than 1,200 students ranging in age from 5-14 are educated each year. These students study in crowded conditions, often with no books or school supplies to help them learn. Despite the limitations of their resources, they are exceptionally dedicated, and have achieved impressive results in their studies.
Our hope is that you will join with us on March 11th for a kick off celebration. There will be African music, dancing and food. There will also be booths for you to sign up to help us raise money for these two very worthy schools. A car wash and bake sale is being planned, and we hope that you will join with us in making a profound difference in the lives of children whose only way out of poverty is through education.
