Civic Responsibility-Earth Day ideas

March 27, 2008

Produced by C. Walecka, K. Davis, K. Songer, A. Propp

Starts with Slide show set to music, “Circle of Life.”

Student readers:

Earth Day is April 22nd!  Here are some things to think about:

  1. America is the top global warming polluter in the world
  2. There has been a 20% increase of America’s carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels since 1990
  3. The US fire season has increased by 78 days over the past 20 years because of global warming.
  4. President Bush has only mentioned climate change once throughout his presidency.

We need to take more concern in our in environment!!!!

New Orleans is a living example of the affect we have on our environment. As global warming continues to escalate, the trees in New Orleans’ marshlands begin to die.

When they die their roots shrivel and the soil begins to soften causing erosion.

Little by little that eroded land is washed out to sea and the animals living there have to find new environments.

The loss of trees also has contributed to more frequent hurricanes and less protection against hurricanes when they occur.

So by polluting we are killing the environment, animals, and other people who live there.

Earth Day is about being green. It’s about taking care of the earth, and ensuring that the beauty of nature will exist long after our generation dies out. We together can change the world, though our efforts may seem very small, it takes only one to make a difference.

Take it one step at a time, saving the earth starts with in your own home and community. Whether it be recycling everyday or leading a major protest against oil companies.  With effort will come results.

All you have to do is start. Many of us want to make a difference but we aren’t quite sure how. Now we’re going to give YOU the chance.

You should first start by asking questions… What can you do to save the world? How can we make the world a better place? Here are some opinions from your friends at Hillview….

STUDENT INTERVIEWS:

What do you do now to be environmentally friendly?
What do you think Hillview should do to help the environment?

Though we may just be kids, together we can make a difference that could really affect the world.

And we’ve come up with a little idea of our own; We are going to holding a grade level competition.

There will be three stations for recycling; one for 6th graders, one for 7th graders and one for 8th graders.

Your task is to recycle as much as possible in one week, and at the end of each day we will weigh each bag and record the results.

The grade with the most recycling at the end of the week will receive grade level points.

But a warning to any of you who plan on cheating, your grade will be disqualified for the day if we find at least five pieces of trash in your recycling bag.

This competition will start next Monday, March 31st , and we won’t forget to remind you!!!

If you aren’t sure what to recycle here is a list of things that are ok to put in the bins.

  • All plastic
  • Paper (paper bags/ napkins)
  • Cardboard/cartons
  • Cans
  • And NO food

The power for change lies in your hands and it is up to you whether or not you choose to use it.

There are still ways to go in a different direction… The world is our home, why not treat it that way??

You could make the difference.  You could discover a solution to the ever growing problem pollution presents.

Pick a place to start and go from there. Who knows what you can accomplish?

What can you come come up with that will save our world??

ACTIVITY:

Students brainstorm ways we can be “greener.”

Class with the most feasible results will be rewarded with an ice cream party.
