Today, I’d like to talk about the character trait, “Perseverance.”
I’m betting that at least a few of you made a New Year’s resolution a couple of weeks ago. How are you doing with it? For me, every year, it seems to be about shedding a few pounds put on by holiday indulgences, and committing to a regular exercise program. Some years I do better than others. But perseverance goes much farther than just New Year’s resolutions. It’s a character trait employed by successful people all year long, every year. It’s about hard work, discipline, determination, and refusing to give up…even when confronted with failure. As Vince Lombardi, longtime coach of the Green Bay Packers for whom the super Bowl Trophy was named, once said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” That’s true in football, and in every other walk of life.
On Monday we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. He was a perfect example of a man who persevered. His “I have a Dream” speech outlined eloquently his goal of civil rights and equality for African Americans. And yet, throughout his life, he faced setbacks. But he didn’t give up. Despite difficulties, obstacles and opposition, he continued to work toward his goal. And although HIS life was cut short, he inspired others to carry on. Today he continues to remain a model for us all.
As we start our interviews today, let’s go back to those New Year’s resolutions….

So perseverance is about sticking to something. Learning from your mistakes, and starting over if need be. It’s definitely not about giving up. The key to being successful is staying committed and overcoming failure or obstacles. One of the things I often tell students in my office is that life is sort of like a card game. You can’t control the cards you are dealt in life, but you CAN control how you play your hand. Think about that as you listen to this young woman’s story:
