Student Activities
Hillview is where the ACTION is! Student Council sponsors the ACTION program to promote school spirit and build positive attitudes in students and staff. The entire school is divided into four color teams which compete in a variety of activity-centered events throughout the year. At the end of the school year, the team that earns the greatest number of points will celebrate off-campus at Raging Waters for a day.
-----------------------
Student Council
Hillview's active student body is led by a Student Council. School-wide elections for its Executive Board offices are held each semester. These offices are: President (8t grade only), Vice President, Executive Vice President, Publicity Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, grade level Senators and Committee Representatives. In addition, a representative and alternate from homeroom Action Teams are elected quarterly to attend Student Council meetings. Student council officers and representatives serve as role models for their peers by maintaining a high degree of school spirit, pride and respect for school standards.

Music Opportunities
Hillview students have an opportunity to participate in a number of musical programs. Present ensembles include Jazz Band, Percussion, Advanced Percussion, 7/8 Band, 7/8 Strings, 6th Band and 6th Strings. Students interested in music should contact Mr.Vaughan, the music instructor, or Mr. Moore.
Hillview musicians perform at school events and off-campus concerts throughout the year. Some of the highlights of the upcoming year are Menlo Park's Halloween parade, holiday performances at Stanford Shopping Center and the Ronald McDonald house, a Giants game, a special ski weekend/performance at Kirkwood for the jazz band, "Music in the Parks" at MarineWorld and the CMEA festival.
Students may borrow instruments through school but are held responsible for music supplies and billed for lost or damaged materials. Click here for details of this year's music program.
-----------------------
Sports Opportunities
Students have the chance to participate in sports through the regular elective program, after school sports, and perhaps noon time intramurals. Students should listen to the announcements for information concerning intramurals and read the District Newsletter for announcements pertaining to the P.T.O. sponsored after school sports program. Sporting activities during school are free of charge. There is a charge for after school sports but scholarships are available through the P.T.O. for qualifying students.
This fall after school sports will include Volleyball and Flag Football. Click here for details of this year's after school sports program...

Honor Roll
Achieving Honor Roll status occurs when students earn an "S" or above in citizenship in all classes and meet the academic requirements. Any student who receives an "A" in every subject earns a Principal's Distinction award. Students in the 7th and 8th grades need a total of 28 to 33 grade points to earn Honors. A total of 34 points or above, without having achieved straight A's, earns High Honors.
For sixth graders, who have fewer total classes, the grade point totals are slightly different. Honors requires between 24 and 28 points, while High Honors is earned with 29 points or more without straight A's. Students may also earn Effort Honors, if the number of A's in effort are greater than or equal to the number of B's, with no C's.
An awards assembly is held at the end of every quarter during which students are honored for their accomplishments. Students who earn placement on the Honor Roll are also treated to a special celebration hosted by the Student Council.

Service Squads
Service squads contribute many valuable services to Hillview Middle School. Participation on school service squads entitles students to earn points toward a Block H Award. (See the Block H Program). Service Squad jobs are available on a quarterly basis and students sign up during Action Team period. Jobs include student store worker, ballroom monitor, student secretary, student librarian, recycling crew, and others.

Block H awards
Hillview School values spirit, service, participation and scholarship. The Block H program exists in order to give students meaningful opportunities to contribute positively to the Hillview Community and receive recognition for doing so. Any student at Hillview can earn points toward the receipt of a Block H or higher awards in many different ways. Block H is divided into four main categories. They are as follows:
- Government
- School and Community Service
- Scholarship
- Performance
In order to fulfill the criteria for receiving the Block H, the student must note the following:
- A student must earn at least ten (10) points in each of the four categories listed above.
- Only the first fifty (50) points in each category will count toward a Block H.
- Provided numbers one and two above have been fulfilled, a student will receive the Block H once she or he has amassed one hundred and fifty (150) points. Students who arrive at Hillview in their 7th grade year need only get 100 points (still with 10 per category), and those who arrive at the beginning of their eighth grade year need to get 70 points total (but only 7 per category).
- Points may not be transferred from one category to another.
- Students may receive Block H credit for volunteer service they do outside of school, provided it is well documented and a supervising adult signs off on it. Only one quarter of the hours will be counted, with a maximum of 10 per quarter. Volunteer work done during the summer does not count toward a Block H.
- over Then, for every one hundred (100) additional points a student receives, he or she will be awarded a Star. A student must still earn ten points per category in order to receive a Star. Multiple Stars are possible.
- Staff and Student Activities Director(s) will assign a number of points to students for various contributions, based on performance and attitude.
- Block H points will be tallied at the end of each quarter throughout each student's career at Hillview and entered into the Block H computer prograrn. Students will be given a printout that shows their point totals soon after the end of each quarter, with the exception of the fourth quarter.
- The Student Activities Director(s) reserve(s) the right to make changes or adjustments to Block H totals in the interest of a student or Hillview.

Scholarship points are based on effort grades.
|
On days when report cards go home, students will complete a worksheet to determine the number of scholarship points they receive.
The maximum # of Block H points a student can receive per quarter is ten ( 10).
To our knowledge, a Block H has never been earned by asking how many points you have. To give yourself the best possible chance of earning a Block H, we recommend that you get out there and do something!

Library Information
The Hillview Library is open for purposes of studying, checking out materials, reading or doing homework before school and at both recesses, Monday through Friday. Students are expected to come to the library prepared with all books and supplies and with a specific purpose in mind.
- Materials are checked out for three weeks. An overdue list is posted and sent to each core teacher. A ten cent fine is assessed each school day on an overdue item, with a maximum fine of $1.00. Excessive fines may result in loss of school privileges and/or the withholding of report cards and yearbooks.
- When materials are reserved, they may only be used in the library.

Dress Guidelines
As you consider purchasing clothing for school, please also consider the following guidelines:
- Shorts and skirts should not be extremely short, with at least a four-inch inseam on shorts
- Pants must be worn at or near the waistline (no sagging)
- Pants must not be tom above the knees
- Underwear (including bra straps) must be kept "under"
- Tops must be long enough to cover midriffs and navels when arms are raised
- Straps on tops must be at least two inches wide (the width of three middle fingers)
- Clothing may not promote alcohol, drugs, or violence or contain risque messages.
We realize that these Hillview dress guidelines do not necessarily align with current teen fashions. Our intent, however, is to maintain a safe, orderly, appropriate learning environment rather than a "fashionable" one.
In addition, we recommend that all clothes, helmets, backpacks, etc., be clearly labeled with names.
